With honey coloured stone and climbing blooms, Wren Cottage is a quintessential Cotswold holiday cottage which sleeps four guests, in two bedrooms, with a family bathroom. This characterful Grade II listed property has an open plan sitting and dining area with a wood burner, the perfect setting to curl up around as the winter nights draw in. The plush, colourful bedrooms with original beams are a wonderful place to rest your head after a long day exploring the local area. Wren cottage is also dog friendly!

StayCotswold is a marketing agent and therefore does not own any of the cottages listed on our website. In terms of cleaning and maintenance, the properties within our portfolio are managed by a third party property manager or the property owner – your pre-arrival email will contain confirmation and contact details for the person managing your property. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.

For bookings commencing more than 8 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 8 weeks prior to arrival.

All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.

Location Information

Wren Cottage is located in the bustling market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, a spritely town with a welcoming community and a range of boutique and antique shops. Take your pick from the interesting eateries such as The Porch House, believed to be England’s oldest Inn dating back to 947AD, Alexiou’s Restaurant offering fabulous Mediterranean food and of course we highly recommend The Old Butchers. Just a short drive away is the renowned Dayelsford Organic where you can take a stroll through the estate or indulge in a trip to the spa.

For your shopping essentials, there is a mini Co-op in The Square, or a Tesco Superstore located on the outskirts of town.

The Stow Horse Fair is held twice a year, typically on the Thursday closest to 12th May and the Thursday closest to 24th October, however, we would recommend checking the exact date ahead of placing your booking. This is a traditional fair for gypsies and travelling people to meet up and trade which dates back to 1476 when its Charter was granted. Stow is very busy for a day or two before and after each fair, and a number of shops, pubs and restaurants are closed. Whilst many visitors enjoy the colour and vibrancy associated with the fairs, other visitors prefer to avoid Stow on these dates

Security Deposit/Accidental Damage Waiver

Bookings at this property require either a £150 Security Deposit or payment of a non-refundable Accidental Damage Waiver. Where you choose a Security Deposit and we have your payment card details on file (for your security, these details are tokenised), we have the right to charge an amount up to the value of the Security Deposit to your payment card up to seven days after your departure date. In some circumstances, we may require a pre-authorisation of the Security Deposit amount against your payment card seven days prior to your arrival date, which will be released seven days after your departure date, providing no damage is reported or excessive cleaning is required. You may choose to waive the requirement for a Security Deposit by paying for an Accidental Damage Waiver at checkout. This is a non-refundable payment that covers the cost of any accidental damage or breakages to the property or its contents, up to the value of the Security Deposit. For the avoidance of doubt, guests are requested to leave the property in a reasonable condition, consistent with the property's appearance upon arrival.

Perfectly located for Stow, just a short walk to The Porch House. The cottage was generally clean, well equipped, and nicely decorated, with good-quality linen and towels. The off-road parking and the thoughtful touch of complimentary milk and biscuits were much appreciated.A few areas could benefit from some routine maintenance to bring the property up to its full potential. Some windows and bathroom fittings would benefit from a deeper clean, bugs in light fitting, an anti-slip bath mat is needed, and a few ceiling cobwebs (landing/living room) and dust build-ups (bathroom extractor /behind radiators) were noticeable in places. Some décor elements such as cracked/water stained ceilings, peeling paint, bubbled wallpaperwould benefit from a sand back and light touch-up. It is situated on a busy main road so quite noisy but not troublesome once asleep.Overall, it's a lovely base in a fantastic location, and with a bit of seasonal TLC it could be even better. Was reasonably well priced for its location and for that reason would stay again.

The property manager was defensive when contacted at approximately 3:00pm to enquire about an earlier check-in. We were advised the property was still being cleaned due to a last-minute booking and staffing shortages and were told this had already been communicated via email. However, this information was provided to our travel agent, who advised that Cotswold Stay had suggested we call on the day to check if an earlier check-in was possible.Three bags of garbage were left outside the front door of the cottage for the entire duration of our stay. Insufficient firewood was provided for the first night, and no instructions were given regarding where additional firewood could be purchased.The bathroom was not properly cleaned, with hair remaining in the bath, indicating that the cleaning appeared rushed. The bath/shower door was broken. Our travel agent followed this up with Cotswold Stay via the online chat and was advised that the issue had been fixed, which was not the case.The central heating was inadequate, and oil heaters were provided despite the cottage being very cold. At checkout, the keys were accidentally locked inside the cottage. When this was reported, we were advised that a locksmith would be required as the owner holds the spare keys. The response from the property manager was rude and felt disproportionate given the circumstances.The baby gate at the top of the stairs presented a potential trip hazard.Our travel agent, who is originally from Stow-on-the-Wold; knows the area extremely well, and felt that communication from Cotswold Stay was lacking, including the failure to receive promised emails. While we acknowledge this was a late booking completed via the website, the overall experience was disappointing.

We have shared your comments with the property manager, who was sorry to learn that aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. The property manager has confirmed that he contacted Travel Australia on the morning of your arrival to advise that, due to the volume of work and staff shortages on that day, a same-day changeover and earlier check-in were unfortunately not possible. He also manages a number of properties listed on the StayCotswold website and not solely Wren Cottage. Your comments regarding refuse left outside the property have been passed on to the housekeeping team, who will ensure this does not happen again for future guests. A starter supply of firewood is provided in the log basket, as outlined in your welcome email. Details of where additional logs may be purchased are also included in the property information folder, kept at the property. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the standard of cleaning at the property and to learn of the issue with the bathroom/shower seal. The property manager has advised that this had been repaired prior to your stay; however, had the matter been reported during your visit, every effort would have been made to rectify it promptly. The property’s central heating is operated via a Hive system, and the temperature can be adjusted manually. Full instructions are provided in the property information folder. We note that oil heaters were also supplied to provide additional warmth during your stay. We are sorry to hear that you were accidentally locked out of the property on departure and regret that the property manager’s response was perceived as rude. This was not intentional, and the property manager has asked us to pass on his apologies if his communication came across in this way. Please note that StayCotswold does not own or directly manage this property, we market it on behalf of the property owner. That said, we are sorry if the property did not meet your expectations. Needs a good clean, repairs to toilet seat, shower door, bigger and warmer duvets on single beds, boiler service, log burner service and some new kitchen equipment. This has the potential to be a lovely warm cosy cottage retreat. If above jobs were done I would stay again and recommend it to others but not in its current state. Great location for the town.
